In an interview with Cinema Blend, series creator Dan Harmon confirmed the origins of the telepathic parasites. At the end of the season 2 episode “Mortynight Run,” two episodes prior to the parasitic alien infestation featured in “Total Rickall,” Rick is seen loading various glowing green rocks into the trunk of his ship.
